Bumpess's Hell
Bumpess's
Hell is named after a Mr. Bumpess, an early explorer who staked a claim
to the area. Mr. Bumpess was planning to make his fortune by mining the
minerals and offering tours and accommodations to visitors. Alas, while
escorting some early visitors, Mr. Bumpess stepped on an unstable piece
of crust. One of his legs plunged through into a boiling mud pot.
Searing mud clung to his skin, severely burning him. He survived, but
he lost his leg and his dream of fortune. He remarked that he had
escaped a plunge into hell--hence the name.
